‘Camera, Lights, Action’ – Open justice has arrived with televised sentencing
BBC, ITN & Sky finally get their landmark moment with crown court sentencing remarks now being televised for the first time ever.
Sentencing remarks from The Old Bailey will be broadcast from the 28 July 2022.
A welcome change in the law will promote greater transparency in crown court cases in England and Wales. The aim is to reinforce confidence in the criminal justice system and help the general public understand how and why difficult sentencing decisions are made.
Sky News will host a dedicated YouTube channel focused on broadcasting such cases.
Advocates fear not, as only the judge will be directly filmed in order to protect the privacy of victims and others in court.
