Pet Abduction Act 2024
From 24/08/24, pet abduction became a specific criminal offence.
The Pet Abduction Act 2024 (PAA 2024), which received Royal Assent on 24/05/24, created two new offences relating to both cat and dog abduction in England and Northern Ireland only.
Those convicted of stealing a household cat or dog from its owner in England or Northern Ireland risk a maximum sentence of 5years’ imprisonment and/or a fine or both.
Please note that the PAA 2024 does not apply in Scotland or Wales because animal welfare is currently devolved.
Previously, pet theft was covered under the Theft Act 1968, as theft of property.
Recognising the enormous value of pets beyond their monetary worth, the PAA 2024 requires police forces to record pet theft as a separate criminal category, in an attempt to capture accurate data regarding these specific crimes.
The PAA 2024 aims to promote heightened awareness and deter thieves.
