Football Banning Orders on the rise
As the FIFA World Cup 2022 fast approaches, it’s worth remembering that Football Banning Orders (FBOs) have been extended to tackle online racism and hate crimes more generally.
In England and Wales, those responsible for online racism and abuse connected to football, will now face a possible ‘FBO’ of up to ten years.
The new robust power came into force in the form of an amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill, which received Royal Assent on 28/04/22.
The aim is to be tough on racist language and other online abuse connected to football, with racist and abusive online trolls being banned from football stadiums.
If you are at risk of being made the subject of a FBO and would like to speak with one of our lawyers in confidence, please contact the Public Defender Service at any one of our four offices. We are available 24hours a day, 365 days of the year.
